PROJECT DATA AND SOLUTION CONCEPT

An overview of the steps taken to manifest our ideas.

We have ran multiple researches regarding the past floods in Semarang and, specifically, The Banger Polder. Thanks to this, we have been able to collect valuable data, in order to complete our task of protecting Semarang in the future. Our collected sources and generated products our listed and described below. We thought of the following two conceptual solutions. Improving the river and side canals, and installing infiltration systems to replenish the groundwater in Semarang, whilst removing the water from the streets. With these two ideas in mind, we started researching, scroll down to view a summarization of our work methods and results.

GIS MAP

Using GIS, we can accurately assess the height differences within the Banger Polder. GIS also allowed us to determine the surface area of the Banger Polder. The information has been carefully integrated into the development of our solutions. The gathered data allowed us to track where the most water gathers within the Banger Polder. Knowing this, we were able to determine where we wish to realise our solutions.

WATER SYSTEM ANALYSIS

Using the data that has been collected from the GIS map, we have constructed a Water System Analysis in Excel. The purpose of our Water System Analysis is to calculate where the excess water will end up and how much water this will be. The earlier mentioned sections have also been simulated in this model, allowing us to find out how much water will go through each section. As shown above, the rainfall falls upon paved, unpaved and open water areas. The Paved areas are connected to sewers, which lead the water to the open water. The unpaved areas are directly connected to open water. The open water area discharges the water to the Java Sea, by utilising its pump stations.

MAPPED RAINFALL TO SEWER CALCULATIONS

We calculated the amount of rainfull per section over the entire Banger polder. The amount and sizes of sections can be seen it the picture above. We took average amount of rainfall in january into our calculation. The rainfall per section is distributed over the sewer systems inbetween the sections. Download "Water System Solutions" In the 'downloads' tab, you can see exactly how we made this work. Thanks to these calculations, we were able to define measurements for the sewer system within the Banger Polder.
